The beautiful setting of the Castle Green Bowls Club

Castle Green Bowls Club’s outdoor season is now well and truly on its way despite the odd cancellation due to rain. In the gaps between the rain, the club has managed to fit in a few friendly games against local clubs.

Saturday May 19th Castle Green lost its friendly away match against Mayford Hall,  playing triples on four rinks and losing overall by 40-87.

Sunday May 20th Castle Green lost its friendly home game against a strong team from Brockham, playing triples on four rinks, drawing on one rink and losing on three, with a final score of 51-81.

Sunday May 27th Castle Green lost a friendly game against Westcott at home, by 43 – 56.

Saturday June 2nd Guildford celebrated its Jubilee Day, with the Mayor opening the flower displays in the Castle grounds. Castle Green opened its clubhouse to the public, and made a tidy profit for the club on selling cakes and books to visitors to the Castle Grounds. The changing room was transformed into a kitchen for the Jamie Oliver team. A demonstration bowls game was held on the green to interest passers by, and young and old alike joined the queues waiting their turn to have a roll-up on the practice green. We hope to have introduced a lot of youngsters to the joys of outdoor bowling. Some of them kept coming back for more.

Saturday June 9th Castle Green won its friendly away game against East Horsley, playing triples on four rinks, and winning on two of the rinks. The net result was 73 to 55. Luckily the weather held, and despite it being cool the sun shone for half the afternoon. Owing to an oversight Castle Green had to borrow two East Horsley players.

The club’s men continue to be active in the Tuesday Triples League and the Friday Night League. The women’s teams continue to be active in the Surrey Advertiser games and in the usual friendly matches against other clubs. Some players are in Surrey and West Surrey competitions, and the competitions for club trophies have begun between the showers. The club, like most in the area, is still looking for new players to coach and develop.
