CGBC Ladies: Jill Bird, Diana Summerhayes, Shirley West and Viv Smith

Castle Green Bowling Club Ladies could not contain their excitement when they heard the news of Andy Murray’s Tennis Gold medal yesterday (5 Aug) and decide to fly the flag! They were taking part in the Ladies Open Day at Tongham Bowls Club. It is an annual knock-out event with prizes of £120 for the winners and £80 for the runners up.

Shirley West said: “Sadly we did not win today but it was a great day of bowling and we always enjoy meeting up with our competitor friends during the lovely lunch and tea they provide.

“We do still have two teams that have gone through to the quarter finals of the Wey Burn triples so we say, ‘Come on Castle Green! Just like Andy, we can do it!’ ”

CGBC v Dorking,  Sunday August 5th

Match report by Colin Summerhayes

Castle green secured a good win at home against Pippbrook Bowling Club from Dorking during a surprisingly pleasant summer’s afternoon.

The weather looked daunting, with heavy grey skies and heavy thunder-showers all over the district, but fortunately they cleared over Guildford by 1130 am and play started on time at 3 pm. This was a friendly inter-club match, and was a win for the home team by 62 to 53.

Great fun was had by all. Castle Green won on rinks 3 (by 23 to 16) and 4 (by 30 to 11) and lost on rink 2 (9 to 26).

The Castle Green team comprised: Terry Croissant, Colin Summerhayes (Acting Captain), Dennis Hirst-Marsden, Dorothy and David Newman, Nick Hinde, Lynn and Peter Smith, Ann Bailey, Rob Helliwell, Pauline May, and Hazel Sage.

Pippbrook fielded: Peter Harker (Captain), Sally Harker, Phil Palmer, Hettie Harmer, Michael Wardy, Keith Low, Lin Palmer, Fred Hatton, Peter Horier, Denise Hersy, John Becsans, B Lee, and David Portman.
