Guildford City (1) 1, Abbey Rangers (1) 2

Despite another spirited performance, Guildford once again slipped to defeat and now, with only seven league matches remaining, the need for points is becoming
rather urgent.

Abbey Rangers for their part are chasing a play-off place at the season’s end and three points for them was also much needed.

Despite the side’s respective league positions the first half was an even affair. Abbey’s Joden Trickett headed on to the roof of the net early on, but for City Joel Oppong saw a shot well blocked after good approach play.

Kai Zini’s effort on the turn lacked power and Abbey saw a low shot go into the side netting.

On 32 minutes George Hyde saved acrobatically for City, but the home side were certainly holding their own.

Five minutes later came the first of two defining moments. Abbey was allowed to get to the byline, and the subsequent cross was shot toward goal where it struck Callum Hope on the goal line. The referee judged that it was deliberate handball, a decision City supporters felt very harsh, but a penalty was awarded and Hope was shown a red card which left the rest of the match unbalanced.

Trickett netted the penalty and Abbey were ahead. But in the minutes leading up to the half-time whistle City had a golden spell. From a corner the ball deflected onto the crossbar before being cleared. Then Joel Oppong’s shot was well saved for another corner, but this time Ben Drake was on hand to head home City’s equaliser.

It was, surprisingly, Drake’s first goal of the season.

Despite being down to ten men in the second-half City were still well into the game.

The lively Oppong tuned his defender but was held back by a defender, and from the resulting free-kick Kai Zini fired an effort just over the bar. On 67 minutes, Abbey scored their second and it came with some controversy.

A challenge on the byline saw the ball cross the line. The assistant ref signalled for a goal kick, but the referee thought it a corner and overruled: so a corner it was, and Adam Sewell headed home for the visitors.

With ten minutes remaining Guildford were reduced to nine players when debutant Jack Lillie was dismissed for kicking the ball, the referee judged intentionally despite Lillie’s protestations, at a prostrate opponent.

For all of the incident Abbey still only led by a single goal. In stoppage time City had a great chance of an equaliser but Sonny Cooper’s header was straight at the goalkeeper.

At the other end Alexander Nwadike spectacularly cleared off his goal line and 2-1 remained the final score.
