Camberley Town (0) 0 Guildford City (1) 3

By Barry Underwood

With relegation beckoning had City lost, Guildford’s players rose above the pressure to claim an excellent 3-0 victory at fellow relegation battlers Camberley Town.

The win lifted City of the bottom of the CCL southern Premier League table for the first time since November. But City have only two games left to play, while others fighting to avoid relegation have games in hand, so City’s fate lies in their hands even if The Sweeney do win the next two games.

Much of the first half at Camberley was played at a frantic pace but it was the visitors who were playing the better football.

Early on Sonny Cooper’s overhead kick just cleared the crossbar, but on nine minutes Guildford did go ahead when Cooper’s cross from the right was headed home by Ben Matthews. Guildford looked good going forward but without creating further clear chances.

Late in the half, the home side enjoyed a good spell. City’s Goalkeeper, Marvin Wood, saved well from a shot on the turn, and after two consecutive corners he saved well with his legs.

But after the half-time break Guildford stepped up a gear.

In the opening minutes debutant Isaac Brown shot wide after good approach play. Five minutes into the half Camberley’s keeper spilled a steepling cross into the box, but amidst a pile of bodies the ball was cleared.

Wood did well to palm a header away from under the crossbar, but the advent of Tyrese Agbontaen and Joel Oppong, off the bench, saw City posing copious problems down the flanks.

For all of their dominance Guildford needed a second goal. A Bertie Saunders free kick just outside the box beat the wall but was saved comfortably by Camberley keeper Dom West.

Tyrese Agbontaen shot wide after a strong run, but a second goal at last arrived on 67 minutes.

A low cross from the right wasn’t held by West under pressure, and Ben Matthews turned the ball home from close range.

City scored a third from the penalty spot on 84 minutes. A great pass from Ben Drake saw Oppong dance into the box where he was brought down by a flailing leg. Up stepped skipper Kai Zini to score from the spot.

In stoppage time, Oppong was once again on the attack and curled an effort just wide of the far post. But by now Guildford had claimed a priceless three points to keep their desperate survival hopes alive.

A stunning victory by Guildford City to beat Camberley Town with an impressive three goal winning margin, despite the relegation risk hanging round their necks. The City players can take a lot of inspiration from this game to bear down on Eversley & California in the next match.

The City fans will naturally take heart by cheering on the team and club both inside and outside of The Spectrum.

Wishing GCFC the very best of luck on Saturday afternoon.
