Guildford Borough Council’s dog warden was out on Merrow Downs last week to remind dog walkers to clean up after their dogs.
Cllr Graham Ellwood, lead councillor for licensing and community safety says: “We’ve received a number of recent reports from residents concerned about the amount of dog mess at Merrow Downs.
“During the school holidays there are many young families using the site and we don’t want their health to be put at risk by owners who don’t clean up after their dog.”
Dog Warden Peter Burnage, spoke to over 70 dog walkers on Tuesday, August 15, offering advice and free poop scoop bags.
In a GBC press release it was stated: “Merrow Downs is an important downland site which is used by walkers, cyclists and dog walkers. As a home to many species of wildlife, including ground-nesting birds, bees and butterflies, the grass is kept long to provide the best environment for these animals.
“Whilst on site, the officers sprayed dog fouling bright red to make it visible, and sprayed “Clean it up” stencils around the car park as a subtle reminder. More than 50 pieces of dog mess were found on the paths in the area, and more were lurking in the long grass.”
“The dog warden and other officers will be returning in the coming weeks and will be carrying out enforcement. Anyone who fails to clean up immediately after their dog faces a £50 penalty, or prosecution.
“If you witness people failing to clean up after their dogs, please report it to Guildford Borough Council on 01483 505050.”

Some enforcement action at Whitmoor Common is sorely needed too, especially on the paths around the car park area.

It’s long overdue but credit to Guildford Borough Council for taking some action. Unfortunately, it’s not just a problem confined to Merrow Downs. You need to watch where you put your feet on Newlands Corner and Pewley Downs too.
Catch and fine a few dog owners and word will soon get round.
