Guildford Flames conceded an early three goal deficit, but clawed their way back to square it before the end of regulation time ahead of Cole Ully’s OT winner to secure a pair of points with a 4-3 win over the visiting Manchester Storm who sit two places above them in the standings.
Storm jumped out to a multi goal lead early thanks to Tyler Hinam at 5:25 and Loren Ulett in the 12th minute. Hinam’s second on the powerplay, with 75 seconds left in the frame, had the visitors enjoying a three goal cushion.
It was not until near the midway mark, that Lewis Hook opened the Flames account and cut Storm’s lead to a pair, however the uphill challenge was still in play to start the third period.
Flames had a carry over powerplay from the end of the second, but they couldn’t cut the gap further during that stretch. However, Tyler Busch soon did, bringing the lead down to just one and Josh Nixon pulled it level just inside the last 10 minutes.
A double minor high sticking penalty to Storm put Flames on an extended powerplay to close the game, but a late Flames penalty turned the tables forcing them to kill an overtime three on four situation before the eventual winner just under two minutes into the tie-breaking set.
Flames goalie Justin Fazio made 27 saves on 40 shots while Evan Weninger was good for Storm on 38 of the 42 his way.
“It was a great show of perseverance to fall behind and not quit while retrieving the game,” said assistant coach Andrew Hemmings. “We would prefer to play from the front, but you take the games the way you can get them and you have to credit the guys for what they achieved in this one.”
