For the third time in recent weeks Guildford Flames defeated Manchester Storm to secure a top half, fifth position in the final standings. The Guildford ice hockey team will take on Sheffield Steelers in a two-leg playoff quarter final starting on home ice (Spectrum, 6pm, Saturday, April 11).
In a challenging league match finale, Flames scored a pair of goals in the third period to recover a slim deficit and take a 2-1 win over the visitors.
In the first period, 12 saves from Flames’ goalie Justin Fazio and nine by Evan Weninger for Storm ensured the period would close still on a scoreless draw.
It looked like middle set might produce the same outcome, but with a little more than four minutes left, Tyler Hinam broke the seal on the evening, and the visitors took the slim lead to the third.
Less than four minutes into the last frame, Flames levelled thanks to Tyler Preziuso and near the halfway mark of the set Mathieu Gosselin had Spectrum’s men in their first lead of the contest which eventually held up as the winner.
Fazio finished 33 for 34 on shots while Weninger was 39 of 41.
“Early in the game we were not playing as a cohesive unit,” admitted assistant coach Andy Hemmings, “but the guys sort of pulled it together at the right time in the last period to help us finish the league schedule with a big win and a top half league table finish.”
