Flames took a slim lead to break up a mid game 2-2 tie on Saturday (January 17) before adding three unanswered goals in the final frame on the way to a 6-2 win over the visiting bottom of the standings Fife Flyers, the oldest extant ice hockey side in the UK based in Kirkcaldy.

Just 39 seconds after puck drop, Flyers stepped in front with an Anton Karlsson goal, but Jake Gravelle’s first of the season shortly thereafter levelled at a goal each and that is how it stayed through end of the set.

Early in the second, Travis Brown nudged Flames into their first lead.  Logan Neilson at 27:27 squared it in return for Flyers, but less than 60 seconds later Jack Jacome had the hosts back in front to ensure an advantage to start the third.

Jacome added his second of the evening less than three minutes past re-start.  A 48th minute powerplay conversion by Cole Ully extended the lead again and Mathieu Gosselin closed the scoring when he bagged the sixth at 48:56.

Justin Fazio made 27 saves on 29 shots for the hosts while Christian Purboo went 47 of 53 on the pucks his way, indicating the balance of attack in the match.

“We have a run of home games here and it was very important to get this one,” said assistant coach Andy Hemmings. “It is a key pair of points and a good way to go into tomorrow night when Cardiff visits.”

“We played well in all facets and were able to generate a lot of opportunities to come away with win a win and now we turn our attention to Cardiff on Sunday.”
