Josh Waller scored 31 seconds into the third period to break up the tie, and Justin Fazio turned away 40 of 41 shots to help lift the Flames to a 2-1 home ice win over the visiting Nottingham Panthers, third in the standings when the match started.
A 13th minute 5 on 3 powerplay goal by Matt Alvaro set Flames to a lead, but at 15:40 Matthew Marcinew had the teams level to begin the middle set, despite Flames holding a 15-10 period shot advantage.
In the second period, the shot count evened out a little with Flames edging it in the frame 13-11, but neither side could deliver the go ahead goal across the stretch.
With 15 seconds remaining in a carry over powerplay, Spectrum’s men were unable to convert, but shortly after expiry Waller secured what turned out to be the winner.
“It was a great result against a very good team,” said coach Paul Dixon. “We competed very well, and did a great job on special teams in front of a very good performance by Justin Fazio.”
