The large apparatus includes anti-slip decking, climbing hand grips, stepping logs and two slides. One slide is long and twisted while the other is wide enough for several children to enjoy.

“It’s gorgeous,” said Bellfields’ mum, Magdalena Kawalerska, while three-year-old Max climbed the fort. “It’s a big improvement and enjoyed by many, many children.”

The fort has been funded by a special scheme under the Town and Country Planning Act and has used the quarry to good effect.

Cllr Matt Furniss, lead councillor for environment, said: “We wanted to provide something unique and fun for local children to enjoy. The new fort complements the local landscape and provides something different for the area. The fort is already a success with local families.”

Cllr Melanie Bright, Holy Trinity ward, added: “I am delighted with the new play fort. It is yet another positive improvement to the Foxenden Quarry playground that I expect will encourage even greater use by the local children.”

The play fort has been built by LDC Ltd and is designed to suit most children’s abilities in the age range four to 14 years.
