Ringmer (1) 2 Guildford City (2) 4
By Barry Underwood
Guildford City’s return journey from East Sussex was one of good spirits after the Surrey side claimed the three points.
The games first opening came on eight minutes when Josh Williams drove into the box but his effort on goal deflected off of a defender and went wide of the post for a corner.
Williams, as usually is the case, was a live wire all afternoon, posing the home defence numerous problems.
On 19 minutes he forced the goalkeeper into an error but his hooked attempt on the turn cleared the crossbar.
It was Ringmer however who opened the scoring. A high diagonal ball into space gave their striker chance to shoot home past Jacob Slyfield.
Strong runs to the byline by Williams twice gave Guildford openings; but the City equaliser came after 30 minutes from Dan Way’s left foot.
Twenty-five yards out, and in space, Way shot high towards goal. It appeared the effort was going to clear the crossbar, and certainly Ringmer’s keeper Will Moger seemed to think so.
But the ball dipped late and found the back of the net!
Guildford were visibly lifted by the goal, and moments later Harry Hennem saw an effort deflect just wide. On 40 minutes City scored a second, and it was Dan Way again who netted.
Harry Nicholas won the ball in midfield, and after an assist from Luke Mitchell, Dan Way fired powerfully inside the far post.
The second period opened quietly. The biggest danger to the City defence was the bright sun setting low in the sky behind the opposition goal. So it proved on 57 minutes when the
home side equalised.
A shot from outside the box could not be saved by Jacob Slyfield who, in his own words post-game said that he didn’t see the ball at all.
In the event, he did get a hand to the ball although it squirmed free across goal where it was tucked home.
Guildford responded well though. Luke Mitchell and Harry Hennem both found space in front of goal but under pressure their efforts were saved.
A last-ditch block thwarted Josh Williams and City were pressing hard in search of winner. With 10 minutes remaining City went ahead again.
For the umpteenth time Josh Williams did well on the left, and from his cross Dan Roach shot home from 12 yards.
Ringmer went down to 10 players late on for kicking out at Williams, and the game was made safe in the final minutes when Dan Roach muscled clear and shot low under the advancing Moger.
