Letter: A Painful Truth, No Free Parking for Your High Street Jab

From: Sharon Dick

Having been called up for the coronavirus jab, I opted for Superdrug in Guildford High Street. Free parking was offered and I had heard very good reports of the service.

In fact, I cannot fault the service at Superdrug. Exactly as billed, but no free parking.

I asked the people in Superdrug what had happened and I was told the High Street had been closed by the authorities as everyone was taking advantage of the free parking.

Parking wardens were everywhere and I had to be dropped off at the bottom, which became a big issue for me. The week before I had broken two toes and was in agony.

The walk up the hill was excruciating.

While waiting for the vaccination, others arrived flustered or out of breath. I feel more could have been done by the authorities to police who was going to park in the High Street.

We had to show our NHS paperwork so we had proof we were going for the vaccination.

The opportunistic parking wardens must have had a field day.

Shame on you Guildford Borough Council for unilaterally closing the offer of free parking. Maybe the lack of parking income preyed on their minds.

I hope through this letter others should be warned there no free parking, so they can make other arrangements and not arrive feeling flustered or, in my case, in pain.

    Wicked! This is totally wrong.

The whole point of the free parking was to enable the elderly and infirm to avoid the hill-climb. Maybe some will be unable to access Superdrug for their second jabs.

GBC needs to re-open the High Street immediately.

I cannot believe that many people are taking advantage of the free parking for other reasons, after all, few shops are open.

If mobility is an issue for people due to be vaccinated, why not opt for G Live instead where there is free parking.

Editor’s comment: G Live is not always offered as an option to those invited to be vaccinated.
