Letter: No Easy, Safe Cycle Route to the Railway Station – So Much For Modal Shift

Published on: 27 Sep, 2021

From Ben Paton

I came across this As Easy As Riding A Bike article from 2012. It explains the difficulty of cycling around Guildford and on the High Street.

No cycle lanes on the four-lane Guildford gyratory.

It seems to be very difficult to find a safe cycle route that takes a cyclist efficiently to Guildford Train Station.

So much for modal shift – and all the council “newspeak”.

Has the county council made any effort to make it easier to commute using bicycles?

I commuted by bicycle most weekday mornings and evenings for seven years taking the London Road, York Road route to the station for a train to Waterloo.

In the end, I found the exposure too much to bear. There was very little safety margin for a cyclist. I started driving to Putney parking and cycling the rest of my journey using the cycleways.

There is no safe route for pedestrians either.

I believe there are a series of underpasses under the road in the picture, also a pathway that runs along the side of the river, which allow pedestrians to get to train station safely.

Any Balchin’s reply reveals that he does not cycle. How would he appreciate all motor vehicles in central Guildford being limited to 10mph? The underpasses aren’t safe or wide enough for cycling.
