Letter: The Suburbs of Guildford Need To Be Included in the Town Council Area

From George Potter

Lib Dem borough, county and West Surrey Shadow Authority councillor

In response to: I Sympathise with Cllr McShane But Town Council Should Be Free of Party Politics

The reason why outlying areas, such as Merrow, Burpham, Stoughton, Bellfields, Onslow, etc are included within the town council area is because they too have assets and services which a town council might have the ability to help with.

I know that Mr Redpath, both during and after his time as a councillor, has never taken an interest in what services exist outside his own neck of the woods, but I can assure him that those of us outside the town centre also have community buildings, playgrounds and green spaces that we would like to see a town council look after better.

Maybe we might even be able to get something like the return of floral displays in our local shopping parades, instead of them being seen as a town centre exclusive.

Moggy Pond, Bushy Hill Community Centre, the Aggie club, Stoughton Rec, Onslow Village Recreation Ground, Merrow Common, Sutherland Memorial Park, might not register as important to him, but I promise that they matter every bit as much to their communities as the museum and the Guildhall matter to people in the town centre.
