Merrow Bowls Club report from David Raison

On a cold and windy Wednesday afternoon on May 16, Merrow bowlers (and their supporters) travelled to Mayford Hall for a match of four triples.

Mayford verses Merrow.

The green is a little smaller than Merrow’s, so we all had to adjust our deliveries. However, the green soon started to turn, which helped build the heads.

The match was a good-natured affair, with many familiar faces from Wey Valley. Despite this being a friendly, no quarter was given by either side, as witnessed by the final score, with Merrow winning 62 – 68.

A welcome warming tea at half time was provided by Jim and Ian. We look forward to our return match on July 4.

Merrow verses Pippbrook (Dorking).

On Saturday, May 19, a dozen Merrow players forsook watching the Royal Wedding on TV, instead travelling to Dorking for a friendly of four triples against Pippbrook.

On a glorious afternoon, battle was joined on a very fast green. Merrow soon started to move ahead, although rink 1 was having to deal with very strong opponents.

A very welcome break was taken after 10 ends for tea and delicious cakes, kindly provided by Jean and Malcolm.

After the break, the reinvigorated teams got back to the business in hand. Despite Merrow winning on three rinks, Pippbrook came out on top, winning 64 – 61.

Congratulations to our top rink: Ken B, Richard D, and Colin M. Well done!

Burpham Bowling Club report from Ian Mackrell

On a lovely, sunny Sunday, May 13, Burpham hosted Esher, with Burpham running out winners, 87-50, and in the process winning all four rinks as well.
On Tuesday, May 15, we travelled to Albury for the G W & District League. Yet again, Burpham surprised their hosts, winning by 33-25 shots, and gaining a 4-2 point victory.

David Hart fully concentrated in the match against Haslemere.

Next day the temperature dropped like a stone. Our guests, Haslemere, and we, endured a torrid time in the bitterly cold wind. They were three players short, so only three triples were played. Burpham again won this match by 57-54 shots.

Fortunately, the following day, the weather improved, and members of Burpham flocked in droves to the clubhouse for the club night roll-up, and the the annual, internal competitions draw.

A near record 291 entries were received, and club competitions secretary Barry Macbeth was absolutely delighted at this huge entry.

Around 50 members witnessed a 90-minute draw. A special buffet, and liberal accompanying beverages, created almost a party atmosphere well into the late evening.

Barry was thanked by all present, for his masterful handling of such a complex procedure.

Finally, on Saturday, May 19, in absolutely glorious playing conditions, 21 Burpham players visited the new Stoke Park club for a 12 man WSL and nine ladies Sapphire league match. The men continued their winning streak, coming out on top 58-51 shots, resulting in a points win of 4-1.
The ladies did even better, winning by a country mile on all three rinks. Final score was Burpham 69 Stoke Park 25 shots, resulting in a Burpham 5-0 points victory.
