A second fatal collision has occurred in Elmbridge Road, Cranleigh – 24 hours after a driver was killed on the same road when his car hit a tree and caught fire.
The second tragedy involved three cars. Police were called to the bridge over the Downs Link on Elmbridge Road at around 9.38pm on Saturday, October 11.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, a passenger of one the vehicles, a woman in her 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a man in his 80s, was seriously injured.
New police statement
Today (October 16) Surrey police renewed their appeal for information and issued a new statement.
The statement said: “Officers are particularly keen to trace the movements of a blue VW Golf R. We understand that there may be additional witnesses we have not yet spoken to who saw this vehicle driving in the area around One Stop on the Alfold Road side of the bridge and at the traffic lights shortly before the collision.
“Were you driving or walking along Elmbridge Road towards Cranleigh between 9.30pm and 9.45pm on Saturday, October 11? Did you see anything that may assist our investigation, or have any CCTV, dashcam, or helmet cam footage that might have captured all or part of this incident?”
The driver of one of the three vehicles involved, a man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The occupants of the third vehicle sustained minor injuries.
The evening before (October 10), a driver in his 20s was killed when his car hit a tree and caught fire in Elmbridge Road.
Detective Sergeant Baldwin, from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit, said; “We understand that two fatal collisions in Cranleigh over the weekend will have rightly caused concern to local residents, but please be reassured that we are conducting a thorough investigation for both incidents and are treating them as completely separate.
“At this time, we are appealing for further information to help us with our enquiries and we are particularly interested in the manner of driving of a blue Golf R shortly prior to the collision. If you have any CCTV, dashcam, or information about this incident please do get in touch with us.”
