After a 1-1 draw in last night’s first-leg match at The Spectrum Flmaes were knocked out This afternoon (April 12) by Sheffield Steelers following a 5-1 defeat on the night, giving an aggregate score of 6-2.
Flames gave up an early Steelers’ goal to start leg 2 and never recovered.
The Guildford side were on the ropes early with Steelers taking a two-goal lead in the opening set on the strength of goals by Dominic Cormier just 104 seconds in, and a Samuel Tremblay strike in the 14th minute.
Just beyond the game’s midway mark, Jordon Southorn extended the difference and Tremblay’s second before the period timed out had Steelers in command 4-0 through 40 minutes.
Early in the final period the hosts kept their foot on the gas with Robert Dowd opening a five-goal gap with a late cosmetic powerplay reply by Flames’ Cole Ully that closed out the scoring.
“We are all gutted at missing out on advancement,” said coach Paul Dixon, “but Steelers did a great job to turn it their way, and we wish them all the best at the Championship weekend. We have work to do and we will get started immediately on how we can improve next season.”
