A 26-year-old man has been arrested and is helping Surrey Police with enquiries following a suspicious fire at a property in Guildford last night (Sunday, 20 May).

Police officers were alerted to the blaze at a flat in Dene Road just after 11.30pm.  The fire was started within a ground floor unit and caused a considerable amount of fire and smoke damage to a living room.

Three appliances from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service attended and fire fighters used two hose reels to tackle the fire.

All occupants of the house were safely accounted for and there were no injuries.

Another fire at the same property at 6.15am on Friday, 18 May, caused substantial damage after rubbish was set alight outside the building.

Detective Constable Dan Chant investigating said: “I need to talk to anyone with any information relating to this alleged arson attack.  Were you in the vicinity of this residential property just before the fire – did you see anyone acting suspiciously? It is only by good fortune that no-one was injured in this latest incident.”

Please call Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference GD/12/4532 if you have any details which might help with the enquiry.   Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
