Professor G.Q. Max Lu, described as a “world renowned academic and engineer”, has taken up post today (April 25) as the fifth president and vice-chancellor at the University of Surrey, following the departure of Professor Sir Christopher Snowden at the end of last year.
The acting vice-chancellor, Professor Michael Kearney, will take up the role of provost.
Professor Lu, commented: “I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead such an exceptional organisation. The momentum behind Surrey is palpable, so I am looking forward to working with staff and students to grow the university’s reputation as a truly international institution.
“Although the University of Surrey has earned its place as one of the top higher education establishments in the UK, there is huge scope to develop our reputation on a global scale.
“World-leading research and initiatives such as our 5G Innovation Centre have enhanced the reputation of the university, however there is considerable potential to maximise international research collaborations and partnerships.”
Dr Jim Glover, chair of the University of Surrey’s Council, said: “We are delighted to welcome Professor Lu to the University of Surrey as our fifth president and vice-chancellor. He has an outstanding reputation, not only for his deep expertise in engineering, but also for his excellent leadership skills and extensive network of collaborators.
“His international outlook and commitment to delivering both world-class research and a superior student experience will be pivotal in developing the university’s international reputation.
Professor Lu joins after more than 20 years in senior roles at the University of Queensland (see YouTube clip below published in 2013), where he most recently held the position of provost and senior vice-president.
Named one of Australia’s “Top 100 Most Influential Engineers”, Professor Lu is one of only 150 double highly cited academics in the world, with over 500 peer-reviewed articles published in top journals, attracting more than 36,000 citations.
He has made seminal contributions to science and innovation in nanomaterials and their applications in clean energy and environmental technologies and is the co-inventor of more than 20 international patents. He is also a member of the 4th State Council of China Overseas Chinese Expert Consultative Committee.
Professor Max Lu’s appointment follows a strong year for the University of Surrey, having been named University of the Year by the Times and Sunday Times and achieved a top ten ranking in all three major national university league tables.
It also follows the launch of its world-leading 5G Innovation Centre and School of Veterinary Medicine, which was recently opened by HM The Queen.
