road works 2A programme of bridge maintenance on the A3 at Guildford near the turn off to Guildford Cathedral will start this weekend. The Highways Agency says that the work is necessary “to keep journeys safe and reliable”.

The work will involve re-waterproofing and resurfacing a bridge, to prolong the life of the structure, which carries the A3 over the Guildford to Reading railway line.

It will be carried out over two weekends, and will mean separate 32-hour closures of the north- and south-bound carriageways. Clearly signed diversions will be in place during the closures.

Steve Cobb, Highways Agency structures manager, said: “It is important we carry out this work to help prolong the life of the structure and help keep journeys safe and reliable for the 80,000 vehicles that use this stretch each day.

“We have planned this scheme, working with Network Rail and their planned engineering work, so it can be completed safely while minimising disruption to road users. Re-waterproofing the bridge involves a lot of work and a 32-hour closure for each carriageway proved to be the safest and most cost effective way to do it while keeping disruption to a minimum.”

Weather permitting, the north-bound carriageway will be closed between the Compton (B3000) and Stoke (A320) junctions from 9pm on Saturday, June 1, until 5am on Monday, June. 3

The south-bound carriageway will be closed between the Stoke (A320) and Hog’s Back (A31) junctions from 9pm on Saturday, July 20, and 5am on Monday, July 22.

A fully signed diversion route will be in place for both closures:
* north-bound carriageway via the B3000, A31, A322 and A25.
* south-bound carriageway via the A25, A322 and A31.
