After years of campaigning, petitions and crossed fingers, a new traffic light crossing has finally been switched on today, February 27, on Epsom Road in Guildford.

The new crossing, just outside the turn off at Upper Edgeborough Road, comes after years of pushing by parents and residents worried about safety on the busy stretch.

Residents had raised concerns that there were no pedestrian crossings between Boxgrove Road and Waterden Road, despite the area being close to the Royal Grammar School, local nurseries and NHS facilities. Elderly residents also said they struggled to cross to reach doctors, dentists and pharmacies.

Concerned parent Sam Neatrour, who launched the petition two years ago, said he was “really glad it’s safer for everyone to cross this part of Epsom Road”.

He thanked former R4GV county councillor Fiona Davidson and local Guildford councillors for their support, adding: “I will continue my campaign for 20mph zones to make the roads of Guildford safer for everyone.”

Former councillor Fiona Davidson said the crossing was the result of “a lot of hard work by a large number of people” and added it was “very satisfying to see that something people feel so strongly about can be delivered”.

In 2024, a thousand people signed a petition calling on Surrey County Council to step in and do something. Campaigners said the road felt “incredibly dangerous” for children, elderly residents and anyone trying to reach nearby schools, GP surgeries and shops.

The petition, which ran from March to June 2024, asked the council to install a pedestrian crossing near the junction of Upper and Lower Edgeborough Road and introduce a 20mph speed limit. While the new crossing has now been delivered, there are currently no confirmed plans to reduce the speed limit from 30mph.

Campaigners hope the new lights are just the start of wider road safety improvements.
