A 70 year old driver was taken to hospital this afternoon (February 16) after a car he was driving crashed into an off licence at a parade of shops in Worplesdon Road, Stoughton.

The car had just previously collided with a blue BMW 330 convertible and a blue Citroen Picasso.

The driver was taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital but his injuries are not thought to be serious. The shop owner and a customer, who were in the shop at the time, were also treated for minor injuries.

Police, who were called to the scene at around 4.20pm, summoned the Fire & Rescue Service to release the trapped driver of the car.

As firefighters cut off the roof of the green Volkswagen Lupo, a crowd of onlookers gathered.

The Prime Wines off licence is next door to the Seafare fish and chip shop, on the corner of Byrefield Road.

The chippy remained open for business throughout the incident and customers continued to come and go despite the large police, ambulance, and fire and rescue presence.

Emergency services left the scene at 5.15pm.

The car appears to have crashed into the off licence. The chippy next door is serving customers as the rescue crew goes about its work.

When I lived on Byrefield Road 1942 to 1960 that chippy was Perrins Fish and Chip, possibly sold wet fish as well. There was a bakers either next door or where the current bakers “Ayres” is.

Yes, Perrins fish shop was selling wet fish in the 1950s.
I was working for Ayers bakery and their shop was where Heaters Bakery shop is now.
There was also Atcars the butchers, and Gittings the greengrocers.

The butcher’s shop was in fact Atkins and the greengrocer’s later became Bicknell’s.

Of course none of this has anything to do with Saturday’s accident.

I know it wasn’t relevant to the crash but I was quite astonished to find that there hadn’t been changes of use in those two shops over the intervening 50+yrs since I left.
