Emergency services were called to the River Wey by Stoke Mill in the early hours of this morning (August 11) and recovered the body of a man.
Local media are reporting that the man was in his early 40s and that local residents heard an argument and screaming before the police arrived.
The police have now confirmed the death of a man in the incident. A press statement issued at 3.11pm read: “A man has sadly died after entering the River Wey near Guildford and officers are appealing for anyone who can assist them with their enquiries into the death to contact them.
“Just after 12am on Thursday, August 11, officers were called to the riverside near to Woking Road in Slyfield Green following a report of a man entering the water. Sadly, at around 1.30am the body of a man, believed to be in his early 40s, was recovered from the water.”
The death is currently being treated as unexplained.
Guildford Detective Inspector Nick Chambers said: “At this stage in enquiries we do not believe the death to be suspicious but we are asking anyone who heard or saw anything in relation to this incident to contact us with this information.”
Surrey Police was assisted at the scene by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance.
