A section of brickwork has collapsed from a building above Café Nero on Guildford High Street, narrowly missing pedestrians and prompting concerns over building safety in the town.

The bricks fell out of the panel indicated.

The collapse was reported shortly before 4pm on Saturday afternoon, when a panel of brickwork fell from the building onto the high street below.

A fire engine arrived at the scene just after the incident, but no injuries were reported.

One witness said they heard a “big bang”, adding that Café Nero closed its front door immediately after the collapse.

Another witness explained that there was a large number of people on the street at the time.

“It truly feels like a miracle that nobody was hurt,” they said.

Guildford Borough Council said that a building control team responded immediately to the report to assess the risk and help protect public safety.

While the cause of the collapse is still unknown, some locals have speculated online that the recent hot weather might have been a contributing factor.

Protective fencing has since been put in place to secure the area where bricks had fallen, and a consulting structural engineer attended the site on Sunday to assess any immediate risk.

The incident has prompted some online concerns over general structural safety in the area, with some people suggesting that all other buildings in the area should be inspected.

While GBC recognised these concerns, it insists there is currently no reason to suggest this is part of a wider issue affecting other buildings on the High Street.

“Public safety is our priority, which is why immediate steps were taken to assess the situation and put protective measures in place,” a spokesperson said. ” We will continue to monitor developments and encourage those dealing with it directly ensure the site remains safe.”

Other High Street users have also expressed frustration that the debris from the collapse still remains on the pavement three days after the incident.

One person wrote: “Let’s hope it doesn’t take the same amount of time as the bridge over the tumbling weir to get rectified…”

Responding to those concerns, a GBC spokesperson has stated that the highway authority is responsible for clearing the path affected by the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We are in close contact with the building owner and the highway authority to help ensure the appropriate structural assessments and highway safety measures are carried out while keeping the area safe.”
