Drivers may have to reconsider their travel plans this weekend due to a scheduled closure on the M25.
From 9pm on Friday, March 21st, until 5.30pm on Monday, March 24th, drivers will not be able to use the motorway between Junction 10 Wisley and Junction 11 Chertsey.
The scheduled closure will enable National Highways to safely demolish and remove an old bridge, which is now redundant after work was done to upgrade the gyratory at junction 10 last month.
This is the fifth and final planned closure on the M25 as part of a major improvement plan, aiming to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and make journeys safer for motorists. The Junction 10 scheme will increase the number of lanes.
The project will also facilitate getting on and off the M25, provide safer entry roads for Wisley, Pyrford, Old Byfleet and RHS Garden Wisley, and decrease the pollution caused by traffic jams.
The previous closure for this project saw higher levels of traffic than those preceding it, which caused significant disruption and delays in local areas, according to Senior Project Manager Jonathan Wade.
Mr Wade urges road users to follow signed diversions – not sat-navs – having seen HGVs clog up roads by taking unsuitable routes.
“If you’re travelling around Surrey this weekend, I’d again urge you to only use the motorway and surrounding areas if your journey is absolutely necessary”, says Mr Wade.
“Please allow extra time and use alternative routes where possible, and make sure you follow our official diversions, and not information from sat-navs.”
Road users journeying clockwise will be diverted onto the A3 northbound at junction 10, followed by the A245 and A320 before rejoining the M25 at junction 11.
Motorists travelling in the opposite direction will follow a diversion along the A320 southbound at junction 11, before heading onto the A245 and the A3, rejoining the motorway at junction 10.
Although this is the final M25 weekend closure due to this project, work on the A3 will continue over the coming months.
