Three bands squeezed in to Ben’s Collectors Records shop in Tunsgate to play live and to celebrate Record Store Day 2014 on Saturday.

Recently married couple Anthea Needs and Andy Prince played their first post-wedding gig under their new name Love Revolution to celebrate the seveth independent Record Store Day. The duo performed a superb set of original songs in the English folk-rock style of the late Sixties, which kept the customers in the shop entertained as they browsed through the record racks.

Anthea’s sweet vocals and mellow guitar playing complemented her new husband’s lyrical bass playing and vocal harmonies. Andy honed his bass playing talents in many Surrey bands over the years including punk poets Sham 69.

Love Revolution signed copies of their latest CD and are looking forward to playing a set at Ben’s again next year.

The second band to play was a modern jazz trio led by Ben’s old saxophonist friend Jamie O’Donnell. They played classics by Charlie Parker and Canonball Adderley in the 1960s style for over two hours.

The musilc wafted over the nearby Castle Grounds and had passers by dancing in the street as they passed by.

All three musicians play regularly on the jazz circuit and their set was the highlight of the day for Ben.

The third band to play was local bluegrass group, the Kelly Lee band. A five piece, with sweet vocal harmonies, dobro, banjo, stand-up bass and guitar, their mellow songs were a perfect way to finish off the day of live music.

Soon a large crowd gathered in and out of the shop to enjoy the mixture of original and cover versions of classic country songs.

Ben is hoping they will play a set at his mini record fair at the Keep pub in Castle Street in July which is part of the 2014 Guuldford Fringe Festival.
