An independent coffee shop in Guildford has exceeded it’s target to raise funds to help a local charity, at the same time as launching a branded reusable coffee cup.
Canopy Coffee in Haydon Place raised £1,799, exceeding the original target of £1,600, in 49 days.
Canopy Coffee is keen to encourage the use of reusable cups and at the same time felt there was an opportunity to help Guildford Action, its neighbours in Haydon Place, pledging 50% of the money raised to the charity that helps people experiencing homelessness as well as helping isolated families.
Customers could simply donate to help achieve the fundraising goal or, by pledging more, become the owner of a limited edition Canopy / Guildford Action Keep Cup as a reward.
Owner and founder of Canopy Coffee, Jonathon Sims, said: “High quality cups like the Keep Cup we are promoting make the whole experience of drinking the coffee so much more pleasurable.
“For us in the specialty sector of coffee, it’s always about maximising the taste of the coffee and the right cup is key. Plastic and cardboard cups don’t really help the complex profiles in coffee, so if you needed another reason to go for a glass reusable cup, there’s another one.”
Guildford Action, based in nearby Beverley Hall, is an independent charity which has been working within the local community for over 30 years.
Canopy Coffee opened a year ago, rejuvinating what had once been a frame shop and gallery which had been closed for some time.
Of the campaign, Jonathan added: “We at Canopy are very gladdened by the support this campaign has received. This is our first public crowdfunding venture and was based on what we believed was a great idea; combining charity on our doorstep with the global issue of reducing the use of disposable cups. It’s great to see we are a part of a community that feels the same.”
Canopy Coffee is at 62 Haydon Place. Click here for its Facebook page.
