Organised by the Wood Street Village Association, the lights on the tree were turned on at 4pm, after which the Wood Street Infant School choir sang carols. This was followed by members of the St Mary’s Church choir and everyone present was invited to join in.

The Christmas tree and lights have been provided by John and Steve Gunner, whose new company, JDS Decorations Ltd, has been awarded a three-year contract by Worplesdon Parish Council to provide the tree at Wood Street Village, St Mary’s Church and lights in the trees edging Perry Hill Green.

Volunteers from the village association served mulled wine, squash and mince pies. The mince pies had been donated by Worplesdon View Care Home.

There were approximately 100 people at the event and a collection raised £265 for The Children’s Society.

A spokesperson said: “This has become a popular annual event, so put the date in your diary for 2018.”
