Guildford Lions’ fireworks fiesta will now take place this year thanks to cash support from Chapters Financial Ltd and Guildford Borough Council.

The Lions made the decision to hold the event, even though more money needs to be secured, at a meeting on Monday evening (April 11).

There will be fireworks over Stoke Park this November 5.

A spokesman for the Lions said: “The total sponsorship is at present £11,000. That’s still some way short of the event costs which are around £25,000, so work now starts in earnest in planning this year’s event and and reviewing the evening to see where realistically we can secure some additional sources of income to bridge the gap.”

This year Guildford Lions’ nominated charity will be Headway Surrey. It provides support and services for those affected by brain injury across the county.

From its base in North Road, Stoughton, it helps people in areas such as cognitive rehabilitation and the wider range of issues arising from brain injury. Headway Surrey also works in the community supporting people in re-establishing a worthwhile and inclusive lifestyle.

The Lions spokesman added: “Other supporters for the firework fiesta in Stoke Park on November 5 include: RADical Systems (UK) Ltd and Ewbank’s Auctioneers (both of whom supported us last year), Lloyds Bank PLC Commercial Banking, Eagle Radio, and the Surrey Advertiser.”

The Guildford Dragon NEWS will be delighted to provide free promotion for the event in line with other local media.

And don’t forget the Lions’ May Fayre on bank holiday Monday, May 2, at Shalford Park.

Its website also has details of a beacon being lit on The Mount as part of a chain of beacons across the country on Thursday, April 21, to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. Activities will start with a torchlight procession from the High Street up the The Mount. Provisionally torches will be on sale from 7.30pm in the High Street and the procession will commence at 8.30pm.
