On Tuesday, May 10, Castle Green Bolwing Club’s senior mens’ team in the Guildford-Woking Tuesday Triples League lost to Merrow Bowling Club (away) by 42 shots (16 to 58). The conditions were very poor, with more or less continual rain and a bumpy green that the locals were more used to.

On Wednesday, May 11, on what turned out to be a lovely evening after a morning’s heavy rain, Castle Green lost its friendly evening match at home against Wonersh by just 5 points. The green played very well.

Results were:
Colin Summerhayes (skip), Jim Horwood, Tim Sampson: 23-12.
Rob Williams (skip), Colin Downham, John Phillips: 6-19.
Jill Bird (skip), Fran Webster, Ann Lewis: 16-19.

On Saturday, May 14, Castle Green enjoyed a lovely Saturday afternoon away on the green at Hayling Island, though the breeze began to cool towards the end of the game. Hayling Island conceded the game as Castle Green won on two of the three rinks, but won on points by 42-48:

Results were:
Colin Summerhayes (skip), Lynn Wmith, Patrick Andrew: 16-14.
Rob Williams (skip), Diana Summerhayes, David Taylor: 18-12.
Jill Burd (skip), Peter Smith, John Phillips: 8-22.

On Sunday, May 15, Castle Green held its captain’s verses president’s game, once again in some very nice warm weather.

The captain’s mens’ teams won overall against the president’s ladies’ teams. As far as rinks were concerned, the game was drawn, with one rink won by the president’s team (ladies), one rink one by the captain’s team (men) and one rink drawn between the men and the ladies. The points difference put the men ahead 54-45.

Results were:
Brian West (skip), Nick Hinde and Colin Downham drew verses Jill Bid (skip), Fran Webster and Dorothy Newman: 15-15.
Peter Smith (skip), John Phillips and Tim Sampson lost to Shirley West (skip) and Mary Frith: 16-22.
Colin Summerhayes (skip), Lawrie Briggs and David Taylor won against Diana Summerhayes (skip), Lynn Smith and Ann Lewis: 23-8.

Colin’s team got the chocolates for the top score; Diana’s team got Kit-Kats instead of a wooden spoon.

On Tuesday, May 17, Castle Green’s senior mens’ team lost in the Tuesday Triples League, at ho,me, to Albury by 28-38.

Results were:
Rob Williams (skip), Paul Plummer, David Taylor: 16-18.
Colin Summerhayes (skip), Brian West, Rob Helliwell: 12-20.

On Colin’s rink Castle Green were ahead at half-time tea by 11-6. After tea they only scored one extra point, on the last end. They do say it all changes after tea, and it did!

On Wednesday, May 18, after all the rain we had the day before, it was a toss up as to whether the evening home game verses Holloway Hill would go ahead. The forecast was 50% chance of rain, with a possibility for heavy rain and possibly thunder at 8pm. Luckily we went ahead, the rain held off (well, almost), and we played right through, though it did get rather cool towards the end. A good time was had by all, well almost all: Castle Green won on two rinks out of three, but lost overall by just two points. We all greatly enjoyed a hot cuppa at the close!

Results were:
Brian West (skip), Nick Hine, Dorothy Newman: 27-10.
Fran Webster (skip), Ann Lewis, Mary Frith: 6-28.
Colin Summerhayes (skip), John Phillips, Tim Sampson:  18-15.

On Saturday, May 21, Castle Green played Mayford Hall, away. The afternoon threatened rain, and eventually it came, though not heavily, and it died off after tea and biscuits so did not interrupt the game. A good time was had by all, but Castle Green only managed to win on one rink, and lost overall by 14 shots (an improvement on last year when we lost there by 25).

Results were:
Rob Williams (skip), Mary Redgwell, John Reeves: 10-23.
Jill Bird (skip), Patrick Andrew, John Phillips: 11-20.
Colin Summerhayes (skip), Derek Redgwell, Diane Longman: 19-11.

On Sunday, May 22, once again we were lucky with the weather, and the threatened showers failed to materialize. We enjoyed a good game against Brockham, at home. They beat us by 11 shots. But, as often is the case, the games were closer than the scores might suggest! Castle Green 52: Brockham 63.

Results were:
Paul Plummer (skip), Diana Summerhayes, Tim Sampson: 18-7.
Jill Bird (skip), John Reeves, Rob Helliwell: 14-16.
Colin Summerhayes (skip), Margret Plummer, John Phillips: 11-19.
Brian West (skip), Nick Hinde, Fran Webster: 10-21.
