Sutton Common Rovers (0) 0 Guildford City (0) 0
By Barry Underwood
On a chilly evening at Colston Avenue, City came away with a well-deserved point, and they were indeed unlucky not to have claimed all three with a spirited second half display.
In the opening minutes there was alarm in the Guildford defence from a corner, but a great last-ditch challenge prevented a goal, and the ball was subsequently cleared.
City responded in impressive fashion. Full-back Sam Sesay galloped forward and there were claims that his shot from just outside the box had struck an arm but there was no joy from the referee.
Rovers enjoyed good possession without creating clear chances, but Guildford keeper Marvin Wood was twice called into action from long range shots. Guildford felt there should have been a penalty awarded when Kai Zini went down in a heap but again there was no acknowledgement from the official.
A big moment in the game came on 32 minutes. Wood saved well but his second effort to clear the loose ball saw him bring down an SCR player in the box. There was no argument about the decision, but Marvin Wood redeemed himself by saving the penalty low down to his left.
For the remainder of the half, City’s defence held firm with Tre Woolliscroft and Alex Nwadike in commanding form. City were more effective going forward after the break. Within minutes Kai Zini’s long range effort caused Emmanuel Olajide to shovel the ball away in ungainly fashion.
On the hour, a great passing move saw Kai Zini put through but his effort was blocked by the advancing goalkeeper.
Jojo Ampah was first to the loose ball, and his effort was deflected round the post for a corner from which the ball was played back into the danger zone where Tre Woolliscroft headed goalward only for Rovers keeper Olajide to make a spectacular save.
The lively Courtney Swaby for SCR later saw a shot go narrowly over the bar, whilst Kai Zini saw another long-range effort comfortably saved. Late in the game clear chances at either end
were few and far between although Joel Oppong’s low shot with 10 minutes remaining was
well saved by Olajide.
