Council Still to Finalise Costs of Tunsgate Scheme

A honorary alderman, who had to resort to a freedom of information request to get information regarding the cost of the Tunsgate refurbishment, has now received a reply from Guildford Borough Council.

A council officer told Bernard Parke, a former Mayor of Guildford, to say that the final figures were not yet available.

In an email the officer wrote:

“Please accept our apologies for the delay in responding.  We are still waiting for final figures on the final scheme for Tunsgate but have not yet finalised them.  As a result, please see our responses at this stage, some of which are the same as the answers to your previous questions:

  1. Our projected final account for Tunsgate is £837,000.  The final account will be agreed with Surrey County Council soon.
  2. We used Surrey County Council as the Highways Authority, with their contractor Kier, to deliver the scheme.  This council is involved because this scheme is about improving our public realm, increasing visitors to the town and supporting businesses.  It is more than just road works.
  3. We have a concept scheme for Chapel Street, which was developed as part of the wider scheme covering Tunsgate, Chapel Street and Castle Street.  More detailed design work is required (which we haven’t started yet) before we can finalise details of the scheme and provide a cost estimate.”

Will there be any soft landscaping to the inside central space or outside of this newly finished Tunsgate Quarter? Both presently are hard rectilinear spaces, inconducive to increased dwell times, and relaxed shopping.

If summers are to be hotter, trees to give shade would be welcome and benches, boulevard-style; otherwise consumers will shop from home on the internet, avoiding the heat, in turn leading to further falls in shop revenues, and closures.
