Mike Rollings has outlined Elmbridge Borough Council’s goals for 2026 in a New Year message to residents with strong ambitions that “it’s coming home”.
The council leader has promised next year will be a renewed focus on strengthening community from physically building play spaces, connecting people with help and economically supporting business improvement districts.
It has been a busy year for Cllr Rollings (Lib Dem, Claygate) with tackling “slum boats”, the hugely controversial overhaul of community services, massive planning applications on Elmbridge’s green belt, and looming local government reorganisation.
But the council, as with all other boroughs, districts and the county in Surrey, will be dissolved, dismantled and devolved into East and West Surrey Councils over the next 18 months.
The leader wrote: “As Leader of Elmbridge Borough Council, I’m very positive about what we can achieve together in 2026. My hope is that we continue making real progress on the issues that matter most to our community – and that England finally win the World Cup!
“Community remains at the heart of everything we do. Through our Connected Communities programme, we’re helping more people in meaningful ways. By working closely with our voluntary sector and community and faith partners, we’re creating a strong network of support for young people, carers, older residents, and all those who might need a helping hand.
“Together, we’re building communities that are inclusive, resilient, and more connected than ever. This includes opening Community Hubs – welcoming spaces where people can meet, access support, and feel part of something bigger. Tackling isolation and strengthening local ties is a big priority for us.
“We’re also investing in family play spaces. Work has started at Oatlands Recreation Ground in Weybridge, with a new sand play area and year-round equipment. Plans include splashpads in Molesey and Cobham (funding permitted), plus upgrades at several parks to add sensory features, improve accessibility, and create sustainable, inclusive spaces for children and families.
“Supporting local businesses is another focus. Through Business Improvement Districts in Weybridge, Walton, Cobham and Esher, we’ll champion our high streets and encourage sustainable growth. We will also support businesses in our villages.
“And with the move to the East Surrey Unitary Authority in 2027, we’re committed to delivering for residents and advocating for their needs throughout the transition.
“We also want to keep listening. Our Community Conversations return in January, with events in Esher, Claygate, Cobham, Hersham, Molesey, Walton and Weybridge. Key topics include local government reorganisation and the May elections.
“Here’s to a year of action, progress – and maybe a World Cup too!”
