Firefighters quickly extinguished a blaze on Whitmoor Common this afternoon (Monday, April 22).
The fire on the heathland off Saltbox Road started at about noon and at 1pm Surrey Fire & Rescue service asked people to avoid the area.
By 6pm firefighters remained on the common checking the area that had burned, less than the size of a football pitch.
The fire mainly consumed an area of thick gorse and by Monday evening people were allowed on to the common and the footpaths next to where the fire had burned.
In June last year a fire on Whitmoor Common affected about 30 acres. Today’s fire was close to that area.
Within the past week there have been fires on nearby heathland at Sheets Heath at Brookwood (Wednesday, April 17) and on Chobham Common on Friday, April 19.
