An amber “Flood Alert, flooding is possible, be prepared” remains in place for the River Wey today but a “Flood Warning, flooding is expected, immediate action required”, for the upper river, between Godalming and Elstead, has been downgraded.
As a precautionary measure, a barrier was erected in Mary Road Guildford and some sandbags have positioned the in the town centre by some properties near the river including in the High Street near St Nicolas Church.
The high river levels following the heavy rainfall in recent days have breached the temporary dam erected by Guildford Rowing Club. The dam was erected to allow repair work of the collapsed Tumbling Bay weir in Millmead but it was recognised that higher than usual water levels at this time of year might be a risk.
The flood information page of the Gov.UK website says: “Property flooding is not currently expected. River levels are high on the Upper River Wey as a result of rainfall over the past few days. Water is out of banks in various places and low lying land and roads are expected to continue to flood.
“Levels have started to drop in many places as the water has made its way further downstream. Further rain showers are expected to continue today and more rain is due this evening and overnight. We are closely monitoring the situation.”
Throughout Surrey, there are 13 flood warnings in place and 50 flood alerts.
