Former Gurkhas at Flag Raising For Commonwealth Day

Commonwealth Day was marked in Guildford with the raising of a flag at the Guildhall with special guests from the borough’s Nepalese community.

At a ceremony held at 10am on Monday, March 10, the Mayor of Guildford, Diana Lockyer-Nibbs, accompanied by the managing director of Guildford Borough Council, Sue Sturgeon, and council leader Cllr Stephen Mansbridge, raised the flag.

Also in attendance were former Gurkha soldiers Bhimbahadur Ghale; the president of the Guildford Nepalese Community, Shamsher Gurung; its president, Navaraj Ghale; and Belbahadur Gurung.

Cllr Stephen Mansbridge said: “It was very important  to mark Commonwealth Day and to remind ourselves of this great grouping of nations.”
