New ward boundaries have been brought in in the borough, and it will also be the first election where voters need photo ID in order to cast their ballot.

There are 48 members of Guildford Borough Council, with the authority led by a Liberal Democrat and Residents for Guildford and Villages (R4GV) coalition. The parties have shared the leader role between them over most of the four-year term.

The number of councillors for each party currently is: 17 Liberal Democrats, 14 R4GV, eight Conservatives, four Guildford Greenbelt Group, two Labour, one Green and two Independents. 24 seats are required to form a majority administration.

All seats are up for election in the new wards.

The borough council is responsible for:

  • rubbish collection
  • recycling collection
  • council tax collection
  • housing
  • planning and processing planning applications
  • budgeting
  • its own administration, including customer services and complaint handling

Why oh why has my voter choice at Normandy become less personalised? We have been joined with Pirbright and given both candidates joint representation, ie when elected I will have two councillors to share with Pirbright and not my own Normandy councillor.
