The borough of Guildford has the highest level of garden waste subscribers in Surrey, and that figure is set to rise as new customers sign up to receive new brown wheeled bins.

More then 20,000 new bins for garden waste will be arriving at subscribers’ homes in the next few weeks.

The bins replace the current green sacks and increase capacity for customers, as each bin will carry 240 litres of garden waste – more than double the current 110 litre green sacks.

Matt Furniss, Guildford borough’s lead councillor for environment, said: “The new wheeled bins are easier to move for residents and our collection staff. They take up less space when full and they hold more. Another benefit is that they are less likely to break or be lost, unlike the sacks that often blow away in high winds.

“Residents can subscribe to our garden waste service at any time. I encourage everyone who can to sign up and help us reach our target of 70% recycling and composting by 2015.”

Residents should use their wheeled bins straight away, as collections from the old sacks will cease from April 2. They can keep the old sacks or dispose of them in their refuse collection, at a tip, or leave the empty sacks out and we will pick them up with the next scheduled garden waste collection.

The new double capacity bins are available to residents at an introductory subscription price of £20 each for the first year, rising to the full charge of £30 per bin from the second year.

Some homes, where bins are not suitable, will continue to use sacks but these will be slightly smaller so that they are easier to carry.

Customers can now pay for the garden waste service via direct debit from April – adding to a number of existing convenient payment options.
