Keen gardeners and DIY fans will soon be able to hire tools cheaply from Guildford Library to do the jobs they have at home.
The scheme is being launched at the library in North Street on Thursday, June 7, and is a joint initiative between Surrey County Council, Guildford Borough Council and the recycling and recovery group SUEZ.
Called the Library of Things, the volunteer-run social enterprise scheme is the first of its kind in the UK and people will be able to hire hand-held at a fraction of the cost to buy.
Initially, the tools will be available on Thursdays at the library from 4pm to 7pm.
If you are interested in volunteering with the scene, are over 18 and have basic computer skills, contact Helen Leech, senior manager, digital services, at Guildford Library. Email address: helen.leech@surreycc.gov.uk
People are also being asked to donate unwanted hand-held tools (no electrical items please) in excellent working to the scheme via Guildford Borough Council. For details email climatechange@guildford.gov.uk or call on 01483 444509.
Guildford Borough Council’s Philip Brooker, lead councillor for housing and environment said: “The social enterprise scheme expands the existing library service and creates a unique opportunity for residents to borrow tools for a small donation, as they do with books, films and music.
“Why buy expensive tools that you often use only once or twice when you can borrow them?
“There are also obvious benefits to the environment too as by providing a place to recycle and reuse any unwanted DIY, gardening and decorating tools we help to divert waste from landfill.”

Bearing in mind that most tools are mainly made of metal, they shouldn’t be going to landfill anyway!

I think that this is a great idea. But there are other places that you can hire tools from. If the prices are going to be competitive, then yes well done. Good luck.
