There was plenty to see and take part in at this year’s Westborough and Park Barn Community Fun Day on Saturday.
The third such event in recent years, it was organised by the Park Barn and Westboorugh Community Association and the local community safety wardens, and held at the Park Barn Centre.
A car boot sale was the first activity of the day held outside in the car park. Inside there was the popular sale of jigsaw puzzles, a jigsaw puzzle competition, photographic exhibition, displays of Nepalese dancing and martial arts, and music from students at King College.
Also outside, entertaining the children were Guildford’s Play Rangers and Surrey Wildlife Trust.
In the afternoon, local historian and Guildford Dragon NEWS writer David Rose gave his illustrated history talk, Wartime Bombs Over Guildford, and then led a walk over Broadstreet Common and Pinks Hill looking at its rich history.
Guildford borough councillor Julia McShane, who was one of the organisers of the day, said: “Well done to everyone who organised and took part. The community fun day offered many interesting and varied activities.
“The photography exhibition was very well received and it was good that residents were able to share their impressive work with the rest of the community. It was the first time that many of them had taken part in an exhibition and they are all very keen to do it again.
“I hope that enthusiasm for this event continues to develop and that more residents become involved in such a positive way in the life of Park Barn and Westborough.”
David Rose, who also helped with the organisation in conjunction with his Joining In! volunteering and community support project, added: “It was another great community day with lots of people taking part and I am sure that everyone who came along enjoyed themselves. The display of Nepalese dancing was lovely and their display of martial arts was breathtaking!”
Of his local history walk he said: “It was a glorious afternoon, we took our time and enjoyed the countryside while talking about its history and the people who have lived there and used the land over the centuries. My thanks to Tasha Feddery of Surrey Wildlife Trust who came along and added some fascinating details about the ecology of the common.”
