Thousands of visitors enjoyed a look behind closed doors at this year’s Heritage Open Days.
The four day event (September 8-11) organised by Guildford Borough Council (GBC), The Guildford Society and The Guildford Town Guides, showcased a wide range of activities from tours of historic buildings, to guided walks and historic re-enactments, bringing the event to life.
The Mayor of Guildford, Gordon Jackson attended an event at Castle Green with re-enactors from Historia Normannis.
Following the re-enactment the mayor, accompanied by the Oberburgermeister of Freiburg, Dr Dieter Salomon attended a variety of sites across the borough as part of the visit programme.
Cllr Nikki Nelson-Smith, lead councillor for heritage, said: “It was good to see so many residents and visitors enjoying Guildford’s rich heritage. All those who volunteered to make so many historic and interesting places accessible did a wonderful job.”
In the autumn GBC will discover how Guildford compares with other towns and cities across the UK in terms of the number of events organised when the national organisers announce the best performing towns and cities during the four day event. The council hope to continue to feature in the top five.
Next year the event will take place on September 7-10. Anyone with ideas of which new building or activity could be included in the programme is asked to contact GBC on 01483 505050.

In spite of wet conditions, it was a pleasure to welcome so many visitors to the Victorian schoolroom on Saturday.
Thanks for coming, especially the two ladies who played the harmonium for us.

Perhaps if our illustrious leader spent more time in the office, he may find a way to fix the discredited local plan.
It appears he will turn up for the opening of an envelope, as long as there is a photo-op included.

Sadly, a few days later, removals men were to be seen carting away from Guildford Museum much material belonging to the Surrey Archaeological Society.
This is, of course, the society which founded the museum.
What about that heritage GBC?
