Guildford Lions Support Senior Citizens And WeySight Group

Guildford Lions, celebrating 50 years of serving the Guildford community, was delighted to host its annual senior citizens party at Shalford Village Hall on Saturday, January 21.

Lion’s president Erica Quaile and the Mayor of Guildford, Gordon Jackson joined 120 guests with afternoon tea and top-class entertainment.

The Music Works of Milford, courtesy of Andy Hart and Kate Lidbetter together with their splendid choir and soloists, provided their services free of charge.

This enabled the Lions to make a donation of £1,000 to the Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Cancer Support Group, based at the Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford, a charity very close to the Guildford Lions and the Music Works.

Guildford Lion’sm president, Erica Quaile, said: “Our annual senior citizen’s party provides much joy to our elderly folk, and we were delighted our guests enjoyed an excellent afternoon tea and splendid entertainment.”

Meanwhile, members of Guildford Lions were also pleased to be contacted by WeySight looking for assistance to upgrade its IT equipment.

As a result Guildford Lions has made a donation of £1,000 to the the group organiser Kate Philpot, who said: “When undertaking our various fund raising events, WeySight is exactly the type of project our members envisage when seeking a good
home for our efforts.”

WeySight is a friendly group dedicated to helping adults who have a visual impairment develop new communication skills so that they can increase their independence.

The group is actively seeking new visually impaired members to attend classes in Guildford or Godalming and learn Braille, Moon, touch typing and IT skills, and to meet other visually impaired people in a friendly and supportive environment.

WeySight is also looking for volunteer drivers who can assist visually impaired people get to the classes once a week, expenses paid and training provided.
