Following the postponed completion of the M25 and A3 roadworks, Lib Dem MP Zöe Franklin said she wants a solution to the “financial hole” it has caused local businesses.

Speaking in Parliament, the Guildford MP expressed concerns over the financial losses for companies, and said she was “frustrated” with the Transport Minister’s unwillingness to find a solution in a meeting Ms Franklin had with her.

The roadworks, due to finish this summer, will not be complete until spring 2026.

Ms Franklin brought up the consequences for RHS Wisley, which, she said, has suffered a financial loss of 350,000 fewer visitors a year, as well as reduced funding for scientific research and delayed plans and projects.

The gardening charity, which has estimated a total loss of £14.8 million, has a petition for compensation with 93,000 signatures.

Zöe Franklin said: “I was pleased to add my name, and I encourage constituents to show their support.”

The MP also voiced the problems that popular local cafe, Ockham Bites, has experienced.

Steve Bungay, the owner, said: “[These are] very stressful times for me in business and my personal life.

“I think if RHS receives compensation, it’s only fair that other businesses in the area that have been affected also do.”

Ms Franklin added: “These two examples highlight a major flaw in the current legislation.

“Local charities and businesses need and deserve support for financial losses caused through no fault of their own, but by major infrastructure projects.”

Ms Franklin has tabled a Parliamentary amendment to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, proposing financial compensation to be paid to charities and small businesses affected.
