The sea cadet HQ in Dapdune Wharf badly needs a new roof – so the cadets are preparing for a gruelling challenge to raise the money to get the work done.
In early November, Guildford Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets will be taking part in a 24-hour sponsored “Rowathon” on rowing machines – setting themselves a fund-raising target of £7,000.
The last time they attempted such a challenge they rowed 658 miles, which enabled them to raise money towards a minibus to support cadet activities.
The existing buildings in Dapdune Wharf have been in use since September 1962. Dame Vera Lynn was the principal guest at the opening ceremony the following year.
The group says: “We support young people to create new ways of thinking and acting with a different kind of adventure – offering activities like power-boating, learning how to save a life, sailing a tall ship, catering for a crew, even meteorology and engineering.”
The event will start at 5pm on Friday, November 7.
The Guildford unit – which has about 50 cadets aged 10 to 18 – is asking supporters to:

Cheer them on! The cadet unit will be open to visitors anytime during the 24 hours.
Alongside the “Rowathon”, cadets will be volunteering at a local Lidl supermarket selling Remembrance poppies and their weekend will finish with their participation in Guildford’ annual Remembrance parade.
