Guildford Snippets Do You Know? No.19

by Nick Bale Guildford Town Guides

Guildford will be celebrating Heritage Open Weekend this week from Thursday to Sunday, September 13 to 16. This is a great time to see inside some of the notable buildings that are open to the public especially for this event (see the Heritage Booklet available from the Tourist Information Centre for a full listing).

The Undercroft in Guildford High Street.

The four most popular places to visit in the town centre on previous Heritage Open Weekends are hardly surprising: Abbot’s Hospital, the Guildhall, the Undercroft and Guildford Castle.

My question this week is which is place is normally next on the list, i.e. the fifth most popular? Is it:

a. Guildford Museum

b. Royal Grammar School

c. St Mary’s Church

d. Victorian School Room in Castle Street

e. Jellicoe Garden on the roof of House of Fraser?

If you know the answer, please leave a reply in the box below. The answer will be given in a week’s time with the next Guildford question.

Volunteers from the town guides and other groups act as stewards in several of these buildings, so do come along and introduce yourselves.

We also put on a special programme of guided walks. You can therefore choose from a variety of topics to explore:

  • Ghosts and Legends at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 13
  • Fakes and Original at 2.30pm on Friday, September 14
  • George Abbot, A Man of the World at 11.45am on Saturday, September 15
  • Lewis Carroll at 2pm on Saturday, September 15
  • Guildford Story at 2.30pm on Saturday, September 15
  • Kings Worthies and Scoundrels at 2.30pm on Sunday, September 16
  • The Mount Cemetery at 2.30pm on Sunday, September 16 (start at cemetery)

Many thanks to John Lomas who responded to last week’s question.

John Siferwas, the main illustrator of the Sherborne Missal, was a monk who lived in the Guildford Friary. This medieval Friary was on the site of what is now the Friary shopping centre. The friary was closed in 1538 on the orders of King Henry VIII.
