By Nick Bale, Guildford Town Guides

Many will have noticed that the Edward and Eleanor sundial has been reinstalled on the wall of Tunsgate Quarter facing Guildford Castle.

The Edward and Eleanor sundial.

Edward I was one of the greatest medieval English kings, and his wife Queen Eleanor was never far from his side. Edward’s mother was also a Queen Eleanor but from a different country to his wife.

Which countries did they come from?

If you know the answer or can add any information to my question, please leave a reply in the box below. I’ll give the answers in a week’s time with the next question.

You can find out more about King Edward and his family’s connections to Guildford on a guided walk, titled Medieval Guildford, starting at Tunsgate Arch at 2.30pm on Tuesday, June 5.

Of last week’s question, the Abbot’s Hospital resident was treated leniently after being found distilling gin in his room because he was the brother of the Mayor of Guildford at that time, John Smallpeice (Mayor in 1707 and 1714).
