Guildford Tops Surrey Covid Infection Table With 42 New Cases

After months when Guildford has had some of the lowest rates of infection in Surrey, the borough has moved to the top of the Covid-19 county infections table, with 42 new cases recorded in the last reporting period, the week ending April 20.

But the rate per 100,000 varies little across the county. Guildford tops the table with a rate of 28 and Tandridge, the borough with the lowest, at 13.

The Surrey rate is also up but still slightly below the national average.

The good news is that in the week ending not a single Covid-related death, either 28 days after of positive test, or where it is included on a death certificate, were reported for the first time since before the second wave commenced in the autumn.

And the vaccination programme has made further good progress. Second jabs have dominated the stats again. More than 60,000 jabs were given in the Surrey Heartlands NHS area, 17,000 first jabs and 44,000 second.

And as the vaccination programme continues its inexorable progress, hospital admissions and death statistics might become the most important measures of the risk posed by Covid.
