Heartfelt Responses From Members At Fairlands WI

The discussion at the May meeting of Fairlands WI raised some heartfelt responses from members.

WI logoThey were to vote on two resolutions to go forward to the annual meeting in June. The first called upon the Government and the NHS to provide facilities to enable carers to stay with people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia that have been admitted into hospital.

A family member or a close friend who looks after someone, and is not a paid care worker, is often only able to visit the patient during visiting times. This causes much distress for the patient and the nurses are too busy to help to feed and assist the patient as much as is needed. This is due to a lack of funding and facilities.

Some of the members had personal experience and the discussion became animated.

The second resolution called upon supermarkets to undertake to avoid food waste and pass surplus food onto charities. Again there was much to contribute and the general feeling was that all food – even perishable food – should not be thrown away. Surely there are ways in which such foodstuffs could be utilised? Food poverty touches the hearts of everybody.

A vote on each resolution was taken and the positive results will be sent off to be collated.

During the meeting there was a ‘name the face’ quiz to be tackled and time for a chat over coffee and biscuits.

The WI is to provide tea, coffee and cake at the Queen’s Birthday Picnic at Fairlands on Sunday, June 12.

At the next meeting on Wednesday, June 8, Dr Judith Hill will talk about Victorian Life – Upstairs and Downstairs and the competition will be for vintage items.

Fairlands WI meets on the second Wednesday of each month at Fairlands Community Centre, at 8pm. Visitors to meetings pay a nominal sum of £2. If you are interested in finding out more about us, call Jenny Page, president, on 01483 538426 or Angela Linington, secretary, on 01483 233967.
