It marked the start of Armed Forces Week in Guildford, which saw a flag bearing ceremony by the army, navy and air force.

It meant the flag was taken by air, water and land to the Guildhall in Guildford High Street.

In atrocious wet weather at Stoke Park, RAF personnel handed over the flag to local schoolchildren and cadets. Police and security people far outnumbered spectators who were present.

The army took the flag from Stoke Park to Dapdune Wharf and passed it to the Royal Navy. They carried it up the River Wey in rigid inflatable boats to the Town Wharf for another handover.

With the flag being carried by Lance Sargeant Johnson Beharry VC , the procession then moved up the High Street to the Guildhall, where the flag was presented to the Mayor of Guildford.
