Improving Safety on Surrey’s Roads
Surrey County Council is continuing its work to make Surrey’s roads safer for everyone who lives, works and travels in our county. As part of our Vision Zero commitment, which aims to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads by 50 per cent by 2035, we have invested in a series of new road safety measures designed to cut collisions and improve driver behaviour.
Working in partnership with Surrey RoadSafe and Surrey Police, the council has installed three new average speed camera schemes across Surrey. These are the final installations funded through our £3 million uplift for Road Safety initiatives, a programme focused on reducing casualties and supporting safer communities.
The new average speed schemes are now active on:
In addition, the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund has supported a wide range of improvements along the A25 between Dorking and Reigate, an important route that now benefits from engineering upgrades and its own average speed camera system. These improvements aim to enhance the road’s safety rating and create a safer environment for all road users, whether travelling by car, bike or on foot.
Average speed cameras are proven to reduce speeds and encourage smoother, steadier traffic flow. They are also considered a fairer form of enforcement than single spot-speed cameras, as they measure a driver’s speed consistently over a distance rather than at one point in time.
Together, these changes form part of our ongoing commitment to making Surrey’s roads safer for everyone.
